Awareness Webinar on Alcoholic Addiction and Drug Abuse among youths organized by EEE Dept., ADBU

The Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering under the banner of the Health Care Unit of School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), Guwahati has organized an “Awareness Webinar on Alcoholic Addiction and Drug Abuse among youths” in association with the Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology, Central University of Haryana, India on 23 December 2021. More than 175 students from Assam Don Bosco University participated in the webinar through Webex and YouTube Live platform. This webinar was organized as an extension of the “नशा मुक्त समाज अभियान आंदोलन कौशल का” (Intoxication-free Society Campaign), a nationwide campaign started by Shri Kaushal Kishore, Honorable Union Minister of State, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, who was the Chief guest and resource person of this webinar.

The program kicked off with a welcome speech by the Director of School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University- Prof. Manoranjan Kalita. Addressing the audience, the chief guest Minister Shri Kaushal Kishore said that just as the British had looted the country's wealth and honour by making the country a slave, similarly intoxication has been also destroying the honour. He said that via this awareness campaign, every citizen should make people aware of the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs so that a new clearheaded and disciplined society can be created. Shri Kaushal mentioned that his son - late Mr. Akash Kishore died at a young age of 28 years on 19 October 2020 due to liver damage from alcohol addiction. Hurt by the death of the son, Minister Kaushal Kishore and his wife, who is the MLA from Malihabad, Mrs. Jayadevi Kaushal had taken a pledge that now no one's son or daughter should end their life due to drugs; for this, they started an intoxication-free society movement. "Our new generation has to be told about the disadvantages of drugs and they have to take a pledge not to take drugs"- the minister said. Furthermore, he appealed to inspire the children and near and dear ones to be friends with sober friends. Shri Kaushal concluded his speech by urging everyone to carry this movement forward and take a pledge to observe the upcoming new year’s celebrations alcohol and drugs free. World Energy Day Celebrated on the global SDG-7 agenda

According to the World Bank, a billion people are still living without power. International Energy Agency (IEA) says that by 2030, 674 million people will still be without electricity. The IEA predicts that the vast majority, nearly 90% of this number will be in sub-Saharan Africa. Energy for Growth Hub reports 3.5 billion people – almost half of the world’s population – face the daily challenges of not having access to reliable power. Energy poverty and financial poverty go hand in hand. In 2015, the United Nations (UN) noted “Energy lies at the heart of both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.” The UN focuses on phasing out coal in stages to ultimately achieve a goal by 2050 of 92% of usable power coming from renewable energy sources. The UN drives the global strategic initiatives to address the different poverties by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) created in 2015. There are 17 goals in all, that have specific, vital targets to elevate the conditions for the populations. Goal 7 (SDG-7) is created specifically to solve the problem of affordable and clean energy for all. With SDG-7, The UN commits to ending energy poverty by “ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030.” Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) is the global leader of the cluster formed by the International Association of Universities (IAU) for SDG 7 and is engaged in dialogue with Strathmore University, Kenya and Qatar University for collaboration in affordable and clean energy.

ADBU recently organized a day-long program to celebrate World Energy Day on 22 October 2021 under its Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The resource persons for the program were Mr. Sanjay Chhettri, Project Manager with Environmental Design Solutions, New Delhi and Professor Izael Pereira da Silva, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation Division of Strathmore University, Kenya. The interrelationship between energy poverty and financial poverty and the role of the UN on sustainable energy was discussed. Fr (Dr) Stephen Mavely, Vice-Chancellor of ADBU mentioned the historical concentration of industry and wealth in the developed countries that are responsible for major carbon emission and their role to minimize the adverse effects of climate change, in addition to suggesting using all resources of energy responsibly. Mr. Chhettri spoke on the topic “Energy efficiency and renewable energy- A global Perspective” wherein he put forward the concept of every energy unit (KWh) saved is equivalent to two units generated. He also mentioned the relevance of demand-side management, energy security and energy efficiency and net-zero energy building in the present-day energy scenario. There has been an intensive discussion on roof-top solar power plants and smart grids for sustainable energy services. Prof. Izael from Kenya discussed the topic “Energy Transition in Africa and its global lesson”. He mentioned the technologies that have been adopted within the campus of Strathmore University such as the Water Evaporating Cooling System and 600 kW grid-tied PV systems. Furthermore, he elaborated on concept 3 D’s for sustainable energy- decarbonization, decentralization and digitalization.

It is worthwhile to mention that the World Energy Forum initiated the World Energy Day first on 22 October 2012, to raise awareness about energy usage, ensuring the affordability of safe and sustainable energy for all people while promoting global decarbonizing efforts, and is now observed annually worldwide.

Professor Izael Pereira da Silva, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Strathmore University

EEE organizes Webinar on Application of Artificial Intelligence for Solving Power System Load Forecasting Problems

A webinar on “Application of Artificial Intelligence for Solving Power System Load Forecasting Problems” was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) on 12 September 2021.

Dr. Mayur Barman, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics, Aditya Engineering College and an alumnus of the EEE department of ADBU (2008-2012), who was the resource person of the webinar, discussed the Power System Load Forecasting (PSLF) schemes used by power companies to predict the power or energy requirement for balancing the supply and load demand at all the times. PSLF is mandatory for the proper functioning of the electrical industry. Dr. Mayur explained how PSLF enables the utility companies to plan well since they have an understanding of the future consumption or load demand. Statistical tools and AI-based tools (ANN, SVM, Fuzzy inference system) were discussed under PSLF. Furthermore, he also mentioned that SVM hybridized with the suitable evolutionary algorithm is the most efficient method of PSLF in the present scenario. The webinar concluded with a Q&A interactive session between the resource person and the participants.

A total of 50 participants, consisting of BTech 5th semester, BTech 7th semester, and MTech students along with the faculty members from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, attended the webinar.
