EEE dept. Organizes HoWS-PV'2023 Workshop Illuminating Minds and Inspiring Innovation in Solar Energy



The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Assam Don Bosco University recently organized a two-day enlightening and hands-on workshop called "Hands-on Workshop on Solar Photovoltaic System (HoWS-PV'2023." Held on the 1st and 2nd of June, the workshop aimed to equip aspiring students with the knowledge and skills to harness the power of solar energy. Led by Dr. Papul Changmai - Assistant Professor at the department, the workshop shed light on the importance of solar PV systems and their role in shaping a brighter future.

With the growing population and the ever-increasing demand for energy, it has become imperative to explore sustainable alternatives to conventional energy sources. Presently, 70% of the world's energy requirements are met by depleting resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas. This trend is not only worrisome due to the rapid depletion but also due to the environmental hazards associated with pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In light of these challenges, the workshop emphasized the urgency of embracing renewable energy sources. Renewable energy, including wind, geothermal, hydel, tidal, biomass, and solar energy, provides a viable solution. Among these options, solar energy stands out due to its ubiquity. In a mere 14 and a half seconds, the sun delivers an astonishing amount of energy that exceeds humanity's daily consumption.

Recognizing the potential of solar energy, the Government of India (GOI) has prioritized solar power generation. To bring in a green revolution in the country, the government has set an ambitious target of having 500 GW of installed renewable energy by 2030, which includes the installation of 280 GW of solar power and 140 GW of wind power. Educational institutions have been encouraged to actively participate in these initiatives to bolster knowledge and practical expertise.

The HoWS-PV'2023 workshop served as a platform for aspiring students to delve into the world of solar PV systems. Dr. Papul Changmai guided the participants through various enlightening hands-on sessions, encompassing solar energy theory and the analysis of internal circuitry in PV systems. Moreover, the workshop provided a unique hands-on experience with commercially available solar panels, allowing participants to calculate crucial parameters such as the maximum power point (MPP), irradiance, and characteristics at both the module and array levels of the photovoltaic solar cell (PSC).

By providing comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the workshop empowered students to become future innovators in the field of solar energy. Equipped with a deep understanding of solar PV systems, these aspiring individuals are poised to contribute significantly to the renewable energy revolution and assist India in achieving its solar energy targets. Inter School Electrical Quiz Competition Energizes Students to Achieve SDG 7's Ambitious Goals and Raises Awareness of Clean Energy Solutions


Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Assam Don University, School of Technology, Azara, Guwahati, in association with Living Thoughts Pvt. Ltd., successfully organized the Inter School Electrical Quiz Competition (ISEQC-2023) on 28-29 April 2023. The event was conducted in an online mode with the theme "CLEAN ENERGY". This initiative aimed to raise awareness and focus on one of the most crucial Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 7 - "Affordable and Clean Energy," out of the 17 SDGs adopted by the United Nations.

        The 17 SDGs were adopted by all United Nation Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals. The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere.

        The electrifying contest witnessed an intense competition with 18 teams among the brightest minds from various states of North East India, out of which nine teams made it to the final round held on the second day of the event. The quiz competition proved to be a platform for students to showcase their knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic engineering, as well as their awareness of sustainable development. The nine finalists showcased their exceptional knowledge and expertise in the field of clean energy, impressing the judges with their quick reflexes and razor-sharp intellect.

        After a nerve-wracking finale, the champions of the competition were announced. The duo of Jyotimoy Baishya and Tanbir Talukdar from St. Claret School, Borjhar, Guwahati emerged as the worthy winners, taking home the coveted first prize of Rs. 6000. Their exceptional performance left the audience spellbound as they answered the most complex questions with ease, demonstrating their in-depth understanding of clean energy and its applications. The runners-up position was claimed by the brilliant Diptiman Bora and Pradhiman Bora from Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti School, Guwahati. Their exceptional grasp of the subject earned them the second prize of Rs. 4000. The Kendriya Vidyalaya, Central University Tezpur duo of Darshan Dipan Baruah and Pragyan Pratim Sharma put up an impressive performance and secured the third position, winning Rs. 2000 as a prize. All the finalists received certificates of participation, recognizing their outstanding efforts and knowledge showcased during the competition, and contributions towards creating a better, sustainable future.

        Dr. Hironmay Deb, Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, was the quizmaster of the competition, assisted by another faculty member of the department, Mr. Jesif Ahmed. The competition witnessed active participation from the students and faculty members, showcasing their zeal and commitment towards achieving the SDGs. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Deb said, "We are delighted with the response that we have received for the ISEQC-2023. The competition has provided a platform for students to showcase their knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic engineering, as well as their awareness of sustainable development with clean energy. It is heartening to see the young minds of today being so enthusiastic about contributing towards achieving the SDGs."



        The competition was a huge success and was appreciated by all the participants and stakeholders. The organizers expressed their gratitude to Living Thoughts Pvt. Ltd. for their support and sponsorship, which made the event possible.

        The ISEQC-2023 has set the benchmark for future events in the University to raise awareness and focus on sustainable development, especially the crucial SDG 7 - "Affordable and Clean Energy." Waves of Inspiration: EEE dept. Hosts Talk on Prospects in the "Indian Navy Career"



The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Assam Don Bosco University, School of Technology, recently organized an enlightening talk on the "Career in Indian Navy." The session, held on April 21, 2023, at the Azara Campus of Assam Don Bosco University, featured Commander Anuj Kumar Shrutikar from the Indian Navy as the esteemed guest speaker. The event witnessed the active participation of 65 students from various departments within the School of Technology.

Commander Anuj Kumar Shrutikar commenced his talk by emphasizing the pivotal role played by the Indian Navy as a well-balanced and cohesive three-dimensional force, entrusted with the critical responsibility of safeguarding our national interests above, on, and under the surface of the oceans. With his profound knowledge and experiences, Commander Shrutikar shed light on the various career opportunities available for aspiring individuals within the Indian Navy.

Specifically addressing the role of engineers within the Indian Navy, Commander Shrutikar highlighted the crucial responsibilities of Engineer Officers in maintaining advanced technology, machinery, and propulsion systems. He elucidated that as a Technical Officer, one could specialize in Engineering, Electrical, Aeronautical, or Naval Architecture. Furthermore, he mentioned that Technical branch officers also have the option to volunteer for the esteemed Submarine and Aviation Technical Arms. To join the Indian Navy, Commander Shrutikar informed the audience about the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET), which is conducted online twice a year for direct entry of graduates into both permanent and short service commissions across various branches. He also shared that the NCC entry is exclusively available for B-Tech students holding an NCC-C certificate. Additionally, the Navy conducts separate Direct Entry programs for eminent sportspersons, musicians, and law graduates.

In his inspiring concluding remarks, Commander Anuj Kumar Shrutikar emphasized the invaluable benefits of a career in the Navy, highlighting the early opportunities for displaying leadership skills, shouldering immense responsibility, and garnering dignity, respect, and status in society. He emphasized the attractive pay packages, perks, and the personal, financial, and emotional security that a career in the Navy provides.

COALESCENCE ’23: Alumni Meet of EEE department



On January 21, 2023, at the Azara Campus, the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department of Assam Don Bosco University School of Technology hosted the second edition of the departmental Alumni meet, christened COALESCENCE’23. The graduates from passed-out batches of 2012 to 2022 were invited to grace the event, among whom a total of 17 distinguished alumni marked their presence at the meet and were filled with nostalgia as they cherished their experiences and memories of their time spent on the college campus. It has been ten years since the first batch of the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering passed out in 2012.

The event began at 2:00 pm with the serving of lunch, followed by a comprehensive lineup of sessions and activities planned to rejuvenate their union. The alumni were welcomed by Dr. Bikramjit Goswami, Head of the department, and expressed his appreciation for their support of their alma mater and the contributions they have made to society. The director of the School of Technology Prof. Manoranjan Kalita addressed the Alumni members, congratulating them on their professional success and asking them to continue their ties to the University for the benefit of the present students.

Alumni pledged their unwavering support and readiness to keep in touch with the department and the University in the future. Alumni also provided insight and helpful advice to the current students. A proposal for the formation of the EEE Alumni Association was made with an annual corpus fund from Alumni for planning and organizing various future events. The meeting concluded with a congratulatory note from the department praising the alumni for setting a high bar for themselves as well as for the juniors.
