EEE Department holds Industrial Talk by Professional Expert

The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University recently organized an interactive Industrial Talk by technical expert on "Substation and its components" on December 7, 2019 at its Azara campus. A total of 28 students of B.Tech. along with the faculty members of the department attended the session that was delivered by one of its alumni and now an assistant manager in the testing and commissioning division of Assam Power Distribution Co. Ltd. (APDCL)- Mr. Himanshu Deori who completed his B.Tech degree from the department in 2015.

The session started with the felicitation of the resource person. Mr. Deori started his session with an overview of APDCL and its testing and commissioning division, along with its brother companies Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Ltd. (AEGCL) and Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (APGCL) (GENCO), as the three were formed out of restructured Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) in 2004. The primary purpose of the APDCL (DISCO) is to undertake distribution, trading and supply of electricity in the state of Assam or outside it in accordance with provisions of Applicable Law and all activities ancillary or appurtenant thereto, while AEGCL is the State Transmission Utility (STU). Its core business is to efficiently transport electrical power from electrical power bulk heads to the distribution company networks in the state of Assam. On the other hand, APGCL is mainly responsible for maximum energy generation to meet up the energy demand in the state, with its main function of Operation & Maintenance of all existing Power Generation Plants & electrical system infrastructure associated with evacuation of power within the power station. Mr. Deori, further talked about Substation components and different associated protection systems. He elaborated briefly about the structure of APDCL and its technical functioning. Additionally, being an alumni, Mr. Deori provided useful insights and tips for the students aspiring for competitive examinations like GATE and other PSUs, along with some very crucial guidelines for technical interviews. The session ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Pushpanjalee Konwar, Assistant Professor of the department. It is worthwhile to mention that the department is constantly trying hard to bridge the industry-academia gap to make the students industry-ready when they enter the professional life.

EEE organizes Free training programme on ‘House Wiring’ under Swabalamban-2019

As a part of “Swabalamban”- the social commitment programme of Assam Don Bosco University, a Free training programme on ‘House Wiring’ under Swabalamban-2019 was organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) in collaboration with Bosco 87 Development Society and Assam Railway Employees Cooperative Association Ltd.

A total of 14 participants were trained through the free skill development program scheduled during 2-7 December, 2019 at the School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University, Azara Campus. In the programme, the trainees got a hands-on experience on how to install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.

The topics covered in the skill development programme were:
  • Introduction to Electrical Wiring
  • Electrical House Wiring fundamentals
  • Selection of wire gauge, MCB ratings etc.
  • Load Calculations
  • Inverter Connections
  • Connections of Energy Meter, Electrical appliances and Switches
  • Electrical Safety
  • Testing of Electrical House Wiring Systems
  • Electrical House Wiring Hands-on

This programme is catered to the need of both theoretical and practical training for the educated unemployed youth. The programme offers a basic framework of electrical theory and provides the hands-on skills needed to install, service and maintain electrical equipment in residential settings.
