NCERS-2016: NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL REMOTE SENSING AT ADBU

A two day National Conference on Environmental Remote Sensing (NCERS-2016) was held at the School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University, Azara on 13-14 December 2016. The conference, organized jointly by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering, School of Technology, ADBU, was co-sponsored by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Space, Govt. of India.

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri PLN Raju, Director, North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC). Prof. Arup Kumar Sarma, IIT Guwahati was the guest of honour for the inaugural session and Dr. Sameer Saran, Scientist SF, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing delivered the keynote address. Dr. Stephan Mavely, Vice-Chancellor, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) extended his heartfelt gratitude to all the resource persons, participating researchers, students and organizers for making this attempt of holding a National Conference on remote sensing application as remote sensing technology has not yet been utilized extensively in-spite of having enormous scope for North East India.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Prof. Manoranjan Kalita, Director, School of Technology and the Chairman of the conference. In his speech he urged to create awareness among the upcoming student community and researchers by showcasing the potential of remote sensing in resolving the core issues of the subjects of Geo-informatics.

In the two day technical session of the conference the resource persons were Prof. Parag Phukon, Head of Geological Sciences, Gauhati University, Prof. Subashis Dutta, Head of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Prof. Anup Sakia, Head of Geography, Gauhati University and Dr. Dhrubajyoti Sahariah, Dept. of Geography, Gauhati University. They delivered invited talks on various aspects of environmental remote sensing. The conference was attended by more than 70 participants and 21 technical papers on various topics supported by remote sensing such engineering, geography, geology, environment, hydrology and meteorology were presented.

Remote sensing is the data capturing tool of Geo-informatics which is described as electronics sensing of the object or phenomena at a known time without being physical contact with the object. The basic advantage of remote sensing is that data are spatial in nature and devoid of human subjectivity.

Here are some of the moments from the conference.

EEE Department organizes SWABALAMBAN-2016

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of Assam Don Bosco University has recently volunteered to organize a job-oriented free training programme for educated unemployed youth of the neighbourhood. Into the third year, the Swabalamban Programme this year had female participant also, registering for skills training on Electrical House Wiring, once considered boys only domain.

Swabalamban-2016, which started off on 28th November at Assam Don Bosco University, Azara campus is a free training program to train educated unemployed youth in the neighbourhood of the University. It aims at fast skilling youth in a short span of time so that they begin earning their livelihood.

While giving an overview of the training program, Prof. Manoranjan Kalita, Director of School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University mentioned the importance of self employment toward a self reliant livelihood. He also briefed trainees on how ADBU family is eager to help youth in the neighbouring villages of Azara, Guwahati for the overall development of the area.

"I am immensely pleased to have such an event in the university", said ADBU Pro Vice-Chancellor Fr Joseph Nellanatt encouraging the participants "to pass-on the spirit and willingness to help others more than getting trained in the program."

"This time too, we had an overwhelming response from the youth," says Mr. Jesif Ahmed, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department. He assured saying, "ADBU will be organizing many such training programs in the future."

The 6-days free training program, conducted under the supervision of Mr. Arun Kr. Senapoty along with Mr. Pankaj Kr. Roy, Mr. Sushil Kr. Minj and Mrs. Purabi Deka at Azara campus of the University from 28th November to 3rd December 2016, was supported by the faculties, staff and students at all levels of mobilization, training and placement of unemployed youths of the area.
