NCERS-2016: NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL REMOTE SENSING AT ADBU

A two day National Conference on Environmental Remote Sensing (NCERS-2016) was held at the School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University, Azara on 13-14 December 2016. The conference, organized jointly by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Department of Civil Engineering, School of Technology, ADBU, was co-sponsored by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Department of Space, Govt. of India.

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Shri PLN Raju, Director, North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC). Prof. Arup Kumar Sarma, IIT Guwahati was the guest of honour for the inaugural session and Dr. Sameer Saran, Scientist SF, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing delivered the keynote address. Dr. Stephan Mavely, Vice-Chancellor, Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) extended his heartfelt gratitude to all the resource persons, participating researchers, students and organizers for making this attempt of holding a National Conference on remote sensing application as remote sensing technology has not yet been utilized extensively in-spite of having enormous scope for North East India.

The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Prof. Manoranjan Kalita, Director, School of Technology and the Chairman of the conference. In his speech he urged to create awareness among the upcoming student community and researchers by showcasing the potential of remote sensing in resolving the core issues of the subjects of Geo-informatics.

In the two day technical session of the conference the resource persons were Prof. Parag Phukon, Head of Geological Sciences, Gauhati University, Prof. Subashis Dutta, Head of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, Prof. Anup Sakia, Head of Geography, Gauhati University and Dr. Dhrubajyoti Sahariah, Dept. of Geography, Gauhati University. They delivered invited talks on various aspects of environmental remote sensing. The conference was attended by more than 70 participants and 21 technical papers on various topics supported by remote sensing such engineering, geography, geology, environment, hydrology and meteorology were presented.

Remote sensing is the data capturing tool of Geo-informatics which is described as electronics sensing of the object or phenomena at a known time without being physical contact with the object. The basic advantage of remote sensing is that data are spatial in nature and devoid of human subjectivity.

Here are some of the moments from the conference.

Dear all

I am forwarding this mail from the Xavier Board for your info and follow up. I am not canvassing for Xavier Board or for Cronos Consulting India Pvt. Ltd. company. But I would like to highlight the fact that this program that is being offered has value and it is highly subsidized. A program that would cost around Rs. 2,00,000/- is being offered at Rs. 6,500/- only, and that too in two installments. Please bring it to the notice of our students - technology, commerce and management. If as a university we can get 100 students to take advantage of this offer, then this offer is valid. So the number is important. We also need firm commitment from the students to pay up since the offer is valid only till the end of this month.

Please let me have by 15 November 2016, the list of students from your department opting for this program. We will have get the money from the students latest by 21 November 2016.

I hope this program can provide a new certification for our students that can be a tool for good placements.

With best regards

Fr. Joseph Nellanatt

Happy Engineers' Day

India produces close to 20 lakh engineers every year, with disciplines ranging from computer science and electronics to civil and mechanical engineering. And they all celebrate a special day of the year as their own in honour of the man who is considered one of the best engineers -- if not outright the best engineer -- that India has produced.

That man is Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, and India started celebrating his birthday as Engineers' Day. A vision document prepared by The Institution of Engineers (India), says of him: "Sir Visvesvaraya, an eminent Indian engineer and statesman was born in a remote village of Karnataka, the state that is incidentally now the hi-tech state of the country. Due to his outstanding contribution to the society, Government of India conferred 'Bharat Ratna' on this legend in the year 1955." He was also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, and hence has the honorific "sir".

SYMPOSIUM ON MODERN INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL IN INDUSTRY:

To bridge the industry-academia gap, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), School of Technology, Assam Don Bosco University, organized a symposium on 'Modern Instrumentation and Control in Industry' for the B.Tech. and M.Tech. students on 27th August, 2016. The main objective of the symposium was to familiarize the students with the modern instrumentation and control systems used in industry.

The invited talk was delivered by Industry Expert- Mr. Abhijit Singh Chowdhury, Chief Instrumentation Manager, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL). Mr. Chowdhury started his dialogue with a quote by Lord Kelvin, "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of Science, whatever the matter may be". His talk was based on "Process instrumentation and Control system", and the presentation started with a brief insight into the history of various measuring instruments. He mainly emphasized on pressure, flow and level measuring instruments and also explained their working & practical applications. "As instruments are the eyes and ear of any plant, so choosing the proper instruments with their proper installations is also very crucial for reliable and flexible operation of the process", Mr. Abhijit said.

Further, he included Distributed Control System (DCS) and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), their designs and basic differences between PLC and DCS in his lecture, explaining about different process flow and process instrumentation diagrams. "Automation i.e., replacement of manual control activity in modern control systems is the need of the industry, it requires only about 4% - 5% of the total investment cost for a particular project and gives the returns in 2 years, so it is better to go for an automated control system than a manual control system", the invited speaker added while replying to queries from the participants.

It is worthwhile to mention that an instrumentation and control engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing and/or maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes. Typical technologist opportunities for employment exist in the chemical, petroleum refining, food processing, automotive manufacturing, steel production, mining, and pulp and paper industries. The talk was concluded with the thought- 'Do what the French did 200 years ago…they passed a law requiring an explosives manufacturer to live on the premises…with his family'.
